Fun Things to Do with Kids in the Bay Area this January

Attention parents! Here are some fun things to do with your kids in the Bay Area this month. If you think there's an awesome event or activity that should to be on this list email it over for review and I'll keep this list as updated as possible throughout the month of January.






January 9th

  • Explore the tide pools - be sure to check the tide forecast HERE. The best time to go is when the tide is lowest (best if it's a negative number). Check for any beach hazard warnings before going. A few places to find great tide pools are Moss Beach, Linda Mar, Natural Bridges, and China Beach.

  • SF Botanical Gardens- Free for SF residents everyday, but free day  for all on Tues, January 9th. (Always free for all every morning from 7:30am to 9:30 am).


January 10th  

  • Walnut Creek on Ice will have special events this week like Littles Skate on Wednesday at 10am (for kids age 5y and under) and a DJ Night on Thurs. Jan 11th. Many holiday ice rinks have already closed for the season, and more will be closing by this weekend. Check out the full list of Bay Area holiday ice rinks and the dates they close HERE.


January 11th

January 13th

  • "Fun with Science" at some Lakeshore Learning store locations from 11am to 3pm. This is a FREE in-store event.

  • Bluey's Big Play at the Golden Gate Theatre - see ticket info here

  • Last call for ice skating at most holiday ice rinks- see the list here

  • BookMobile & Storytime at Entwined in GGP 1pm to 6pm . The story time will take place 2:30p - 3p. Event info.


January 14th

  • Free family day at the SFMoMa. Tickets need to be reserved in advance.

  • Bluey's Big Play at the Golden Gate Theatre - see ticket info here 


January 15th

  • Free entrance days in the National Parks

  • Hike and see the lady bugs at Reinhardt Regional Redwood Park in Oakland (Steam Trail) and Uvas Canyon Park in Morgan Hill ( Waterfall Loop trail).


January 20th

  • Light Up the Night Bike Parade in Golden Gate Park 5pm *Free- Event Info

  • Napa Lighted Art Festival 4:30pm - 6pm *Free (600 Main St, Napa ) - Event Info

  • Oogubi Pop-Up: 49er Pregame Watch Party 3:30p to 5:30pm (in San Francisco) - Tickets .

  • FREE kids yoga class for ages 2 to 6yo by Mini Yoga Club in Campbell, 10am

  • Family Fun at the Randall Museum in SF - check out all their offerings


January 21st

  • Oogubi's "Culinary Chaos" pop-up at Korner Kitchen in Oakland. Register here.

  • Exploratorium's "Glow" exhibit is happening until 1/28

  • Try an indoor play space.

  • Check your local library for free events and family story times.


January 26th

  • SF Zoo- free day for SF residents only and on weekdays in January kids age 12yo and under can enter for free.

  • Arts + Crafts Days at The Public Market in Emeryville from 10am to 12pm: This is a FREE event for young children, but advanced registration is required. Crafts and activities provided by Habitot Children’s Museum.

  • Children’s Fairyland (Oakland) Lunar New Year celebration January 26 to January 28th with Lion Dancers, Kids Dragon Parade and more. See schedule of events each day HERE


January 27th

  • Light Up the Night Bike Parade in Golden Gate Park - 2mile family friendly bike ride through JFK Promenade. Meet by the Entiwned installation in front of Peacock Meadow at 5pm >> RSVP and more details HERE

  • Family fun day at Happy Hollow Zoo (San Jose)

  • Hawyward Mobile Rec activities at Stratford Village Park

  • Lowes Kids Free Workshops: Registration Opens at 9:01am for March 16th workshop (The February workshops are already full)

January 28th

  • FREE craft class at select Michael's stores locations, 2pm to 4pm

  • Kid-friendly 49ers Watch Party- sensory play pop up hosted by Oogubi 3:30pm to 5:30pm at the East Cut Crossing in SF - Get tickets here

  • Habitot Mobile Museum in Orinda 10:30am to 3:30pm- Best for kids ages 0 to 5yr. Admission is based on a sliding scale ranging from $1 to $40 (pay what you can). Register for a time slot in advance HERE

  • Oakland Chinatown’s 32nd Annual Lunar New Year Bazaar happening 1/27 to 1/28, 10am to 5pm at 9th & Franklin Sts.

Ongoing Events This Month

  • CuriOdyssey’s Illuminodysey exhibit  ends Jan 28th

  • Oakland Zoo's Glowfari ends this month. Tickets are pretty much sold out but if you are going, check out my tips HERE.

  • Entwined at Golden Gate Park is happening until April.

  • See the Magnolia blossoms at the SF Botanical Garden.
